Prison officers concerned over security

Prison officers have been meeting with the Director General of the Irish Prison service this afternoon to discuss security concerns in Limerick.

The meeting follows the abduction and assault of a Limerick prison officer’s son last night.

The 21-year-old was robbed and beaten before escaping.

This is only the latest in a number of incidents involving staff at Limerick prison, according to Eugene Dennehy of the Prison Officers Association.

Mr Dennehy said the POA will be seeking more resources to ensure that criminal gangs in Limerick are not allowed to undermine the prison service and intimidate its members.

The group will also be seeking a meeting with the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, and the Garda Commissioner to review staff security.
