Gardaí in Limerick are investigating the abduction, assault and robbery of a 21-year-old man in the city last night.

The victim was waiting at a bus stop on the Ennis Road when he was dragged into a passing car.

The man was beaten and robbed before being thrown out of the moving vehicle around an hour later in Meelick.

Gardaí have confirmed that the victim was the son of a prison officer working at Limerick jail, but they insisted that the incident had nothing to do with recent security issues at the prison.

The Prison Officers Association, however, said they were planning to raise the matter in talks with the prison authorities this afternoon.
