Around 1,000 rounds of ammunition and a quantity of mercury, which could be used in making bombs, was found close to the River Shannon, near Parteen, in Co Clare.

The find was made by a number of Fishery Protection officers who were on duty on the river near the Ardnacrusha power station.

The haul, which was recovered two days ago, is being examined at Garda headquarters in Dublin.
