The Equality Authority has ordered the Southern Regional Fisheries Board to pay €10,000 in compensation to a fisheries officer who was discriminated against because of his disability.

The worker, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, has restrictions on his driving licence that mean he can only drive vehicles fitted with special hand controls.

The Southern Regional Fisheries Board was found to have discriminated against him by refusing to fit such controls to his work vehicle.

The man in question had been awarded a medal for bravery by the board for saving a life.
