Man admits role in Cork assault
A stone mason confessed today to conspiring with others to commit an assault on John Butler at Gurranabraher Road, Cork on October 7, 2002.
Mr Butler, aged 20, of Knocknaheeny Avenue, Cork, died as a result of injuries suffered in a single shotgun blast to the chest last October 7.
The incident followed a row in a nearby chip shop.
Thomas Morey, aged 23, of 101 Gerald Griffen St, Cork, was before Cork Circuit Criminal Court today where he was arraigned on the single count against him.
Morey replied ‘guilty’ to the charge of conspiring with others to commit an assault on John Butler at Gurranabraher Road on October 7 last.
John Edwards senior counsel for the defendant applied to have sentencing in the case adjourned so that a probation and welfare report could be prepared on the accused.
Judge Sean O’Donnabhain agreed to adjourn it until May 7 for sentencing. There was no State objection to Morey being remanded on continuing bail until then.
No details were given in court on the precise involvement of Morey in the crime. Such details will be given on the sentencing day.
Previously at Cork District Court bail was set at €3,500. An intensive investigation involving the taking of statements from up to 40 witnesses has been going on since the incident.
It is understood that two other men are sought by gardaí in relation to the case.
