NI voters urged to register for European poll

People in the North wanting to vote in the European elections in June and who did not register for the last Assembly election still have time to do so, the chief electoral officer said today.

Denis Stanley said anyone eligible to vote may apply under the rolling registration system – but must do so by April 8.

Additionally electors who have moved home can have their details amended - something which was particularly important where the move might entail a change of polling station, he said.

Rolling registration application forms can be obtained from any area electoral office or be downloaded from the Electoral Office website, he added.

Mr Stanley said the Electoral Office was anxious to ensure that everyone entitled to be on the register was properly entered and that as many electors as possible exercised their right to vote.

Northern Ireland will return three MEPs on June 10, and for the first time since the European Parliament was established in 1979 neither Democratic Unionist Party leader, Ian Paisley or former SDLP leader John Hume will be standing.

Both parties will be selecting their new candidates in the next couple of weeks.
