A European Union official has vowed that Ireland will not lose vital cohesion funds following the enlargement of the EU later this year.

Speaking in Dublin, Manfred Besche, the head of the EU body that handles regional funding for Ireland and the UK, said the funding system would have to be reformed to ensure balanced development in an enlarged EU.
