Stationary firm to cut 150 jobs

A stationary company is paying off 150 workers and moving their work to eastern Europe, trade unionists said tonight.

A representative of the GPMU met with management of Victor Stationary in Belfast today and confirmed afterwards production was being moved to Estonia.

The company, based at Marshalls Road, has been operating for over 100 years and is one of Europe’s biggest producers of paper notebooks.

A head office dealing mainly with IT and administration will be retained in Belfast.

The company has so far declined to comment but the union said the firm had battled against lower-cost eastern European competition and been left with a choice of relocation or closure.
