The Government is to reform legislation that currently permits either the bride or groom to be absent from their formal marriage ceremony.

The present law, which dates back a century and a half, is to be changed as part of an overall package in the Civil Registration Bill, being introduced by Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Coughlan.
