Mr Leahy was abducted on Monday along with two Germans while on a cycling tour in the Sistan-Baluchestan province of Iran, close to the border with Pakistan.

The Iranian authorities have claimed that the kidnappers are drug smugglers who have demanded a €5m ransom for the release of the tourists.
