Ahern says EU preparations for presidency are on track

The Taoiseach says Ireland's preparations for hosting the EU Presidency in the first six months of next year are well on course.

Mr Ahern was speaking in the capital of Latvia last night after he held talks with Prime Minister Einars Repse.

Latvia is one of ten countries that will join the EU next May bringing the membership to 25 States.

Bertie Ahern says Ireland will also play a large part in expanding the EU beyond next May.

In March, discussions will begin about the accession of Croatia into the EU.
