One in eight men develops osteoporosis

One in eight men is likely to develop an oesteoprotic-related fracture at some stage of their life, according to the president of the Irish osteoporosis society, Professor Moira O'Brien.

More than 40,000 Irish men are believed to be affected by the condition.

Prof O'Brien said men of all ages need to be more aware that they are at risk, adding osteoporosis is a "silent disease".

Prof O'Brien added that men in their twenties and thirties can get osteoporosis and that it can be due to medication or stress, among other causes.
