Fine Gael is calling on the government and the Minister for Justice to implement an immediate plan to tackle gangland crime.

It says 19 gangland murders have already occurred this year, murder trials are collapsing and crime journalists are being threatened at their homes.

The opposition party says Minister Michael McDowell persists in contradicting the Garda Commissioner and the GRA when he claims it is not a matter of resources.

Fine Gael is suggesting a number of measures in a private members motion, being tabled later today.
