Algerian man to appear on terror charges

A 25-year-old Algerian man arrested in Northern Ireland for having suspected links with al-Qaida will appear in court on terrorism charges tomorrow, police said tonight.

Abbas Boutrab will be charged with receiving instructions in the use of explosives, the possession of items of use to terrorists and of documents of use to terrorists.

He will be appearing in Laganside Court, police reported.

Yesterday police were granted an extended period of detention to question the man.

Boutrab was arrested last Monday at Maghaberry prison, Co Antrim, where he had been held along with five other immigration detainees for the past six months.

Police were earlier given a 72-hour extension to question him.
