Trimble: IRA process was not transparent enough

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has accused the IRA of breaking a promise by refusing to disclose details of decommissioned weapons.

The former First Minister said a halt had to be called to the political process earlier this week because Unionists needed transparency on decommissioning before moving forward.

"The irony of this is that three years ago, when republicans committed to the decommissioning process, they themselves said that they would be doing it in a way to maximise public confidence," he said.

"That's the one thing they have singly failed to do the whole way through. They've insisted on it being a secret process. "

However Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has insisted that all parties, including David Trimble’s UUP, had agreed to a level of confidentially for the IRA decommissioning process.

"Do you think Mr Trimble didn't see the IRA statements, didn't see the statement that I was to make?" he asked.
