Murder victim was 'in conspiracy to destroy world'

A mentally-ill man killed his father because he thought he was a "prime mover in a conspiracy to destroy the world", a murder trial jury was told today.

Prosecution counsel Kenneth Mills SC told the jury at the Central Criminal Court Kevin Parker was also convinced he was going to be the "saviour of the second coming" when he killed his father and they must decide whether to return a verdict of guilty but insane.

Mr Parker, of an address at Montree House in Athlone, Co Westmeath, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of John Parker at Glasson Village near Athlone between the 28 and 29 of September 2000.

Mr Mills told the court John Parker died after receiving 65 stab wounds with a knife.

The trial before Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins and a jury of seven women continues today.
