Lack of social workers delaying international adoptions

A shortage of social workers in the Eastern region is stalling the process of international adoptions.

According to the chairperson of the International Adoption Agency, Kevin O’Byrne, waiting lists for adoption will continue to grow unless more social workers are appointed.

International adoption day, which takes place today, aims to assist those considering adoption and those looking for information and guidance on the adoption process.

Kevin O'Byrne said that as fewer Irish born children are placed for adoption, the ever growing interest in foreign adoption is likely to continue. However he is critical of the delays encountered by applicants.

"In the Dublin region, it could be two to three years between the time that you actually write in applying for an application form to the time that you get your declaration from the Adoption Board.

"The main difficulty with adoption in the Eastern region is the fact that there is a waiting list and it takes time to be assessed and that's primarily due to a lack of social workers."
