Landslide evacuees to learn result of geological survey

The families evacuated from their homes following a landslide in Co Mayo last month are due to find out today whether it is safe to return to the houses.

Around 40 households were advised to move out almost two weeks ago following the landslide on the slopes of Dooncartin mountain in the Pollothomas area.

Geologists have been examining the area to assess the risk of further slippage and the local residents are due to hear the results of their investigation during a meeting with Mayo County Council later today.

The chairman of a local committee said he hoped some of the families would be allowed to return to their homes later today.
