Road closed due to landslide risk in Mayo

Mayo County Council has closed a main road in the north of the county amid fears of further landslides around Dooncarton mountain.

A landslide in the Pollothomas area at the weekend damaged two bridges and a graveyard and covered a two-mile stretch of road with mud. It also affected around 25 homes.

Yesterday, Mayo County Council advised around 40 householders to evacuate the area while geologists assessed the risk of further landslides.

Today, the council decided to close the road between Pollothomas and Glengad after the geologists confirmed ongoing ground movements in the area.

The cemetery affected by last weekend’s slippage has also been declared off-limits due to the instability of the ground surface in the area.
