40 householders evacuated in Co Mayo

Officials in Co Mayo have advised around 40 householders in the area affected by last week’s landslide to evacuate their homes due to the risk of further landslides.

Conditions around Doocartin Mountain deteriorated further last night, with heavy rains raising fears of another slippage.

Mayo County Council, the gardaí and local rescue services said the risk to homes was small, but they advised residents to leave as a precaution.

Around 25 houses were surrounded by mud during last Friday night’s landslide in the Pollothomas area near Belmullet.

Two bridges were also damaged and a two-mile stretch of road was buried in mud.
