Dublin confirmed as leading Irish port
Dublin Port was confirmed as Ireland's leading port when it won the Port Of The Year Award at the All Ireland Transport and Logistics Awards 2003 held in Belfast at the weekend.
It was also confirmed as Ireland's largest and busiest port handling over 46% by volume of all imports and exports from Ireland.
Dublin Port Company was established in 1997 as a corporate entity to manage the port of
Dublin on a commercial basis.
The company has seen an increase in throughput from 6.6 million tonnes to over the last decade while €150 million has been invested in port infrastructure during the past 5 years.
It hosts two of the world's biggest ferries daily - the new 211m long Stena Adventurer on the Dublin - Holyhead route and Ulysses, the biggest car ferry in the world.
Five ferry companies providing up to 18 round trips per day catering for both freight and tourism, also operate from the port.
Last year Dublin Port Company attracted 45,000 cruise-line visitors to Dublin.
Speaking after the awards chief executive, Enda Connellan said: “The fact that this has been recognised by the industry gives us a massive boost and motivates us to continue to pursue our
mission to be the best customer centred medium-sized port in Europe.”
