FG TD calls for privatisation of public transport services
Fine Gael TD Olivia Mitchell has claimed that privatisation of bus services would help improve the public transport system in Ireland.
Ms Mitchell said today that the idea of a European Car Free Day could not work in Ireland until transport operators were able to meet the demands of the public.
She claimed privatisation was the answer to the problem, despite the fact that it has been a disaster from a transport point of view in other countries, particularly Britain.
Unions representing workers at CIE are currently fighting the Government’s plans to privatise 25% of Dublin Bus services, saying they would lead to a deteriorating service, job losses and an increased burden on the taxpayer.
