Taoiseach says mechanisms for elections in place

The Taoiseach has said the mechanisms are now in place to make the Northern Assembly work effectively.

Mr Ahern was speaking in advance of his meeting with Ulster Unionist Leader David Trimble.

He indicated that the onus would be fully on the IRA to decommission and disband if a date for elections was set.

The Taoiseach said the creation of the Independent Monitoring Commission would ensure that all paramilitary activity is properly monitored.
