Martin to discuss Neary case with Medical Council
Health Minister Micheál Martin is due to meet officials from the Irish Medical Council later today to discuss the implications of a €270,000 damages award to a woman who had her womb removed by Dr Michael Neary.
The High Court awarded the damages to 37-year-old Alison Gough after finding that Dr Neary, an obstetrician at Our Lady's Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth, unnecessarily removed her womb 11 years ago.
Dr Neary lost an appeal against the damages award last month.
He was subsequently struck off the medical register after the Medical Council found him guilty of misconduct for removing the wombs of 10 women during his career in Drogheda.
The council is expected to seek an inquiry into Dr Neary's conduct and new regulations on medical accountability during its meeting with Mr Martin today.
