The Irish Refugee Council has called for a tighter monitoring system for immigrants at all ports of entry into Ireland.

The call follows an incident at Cork Airport on Saturday when two Lithuanian men physically harmed themselves in an attempt to avoid deportation.

The pair were treated in hospital in Cork. They had not claimed asylum and have been refused permission to remain in Ireland.
