A bomb had been left inside an abandoned car which exploded at a bus depot in Newry, police confirmed today.

The explosion happened as fire crews were extinguishing a blaze in the vehicle at Edward Street, Newry, Co Down, shortly after 10pm last night.

Police are investigating whether terrorists were behind the attack.

No-one was injured in the explosion but a number of buses suffered shrapnel and scorch damage.

Army technical officers who examined the scene discovered an explosive device inside the vehicle.

Police say a car was seen speeding away from the Ulsterbus depot before the incident.

A senior police officer described the attack as “a reckless act“.
