Lifeboat captain appeals for common sense around water

The emergency sea rescue team in Bantry are appealing to members of the public to observe basic safety precautions when by the sea or getting involved in water activities.

Capt Trevor Hughes, of the Bantry Lifeboat crew, says people should not venture out on their own, and always let someone know where they are going and at what time they expect to return.

The appeal comes after the Bantry Lifeboat was involved in a futile rescue attempt of a man, in Glengarriff, yesterday.

The crew commenced a search in the area but found no-one. A half-hour later, the missing man turned up on the Pier as he returned to his car, unaware of the search that had been under way.
