Gardai have confirmed that more than 5,000 people have been protesting against the awarding of the north-west local radio licence to Ocean FM Radio.

The new station will take up the licence this September.

Ocean FM had referred to North West Radio listeners as old and from a different class in a submission to the Broadcasting Commission.

Supporters of North West radio however turned out in their thousands today to voice their opposition to the new licence holders.

They are calling for a reversal of the commission's decision.
