The Special Olympics was declared open last night as 80,000 people gathered in Croke Park to witness the spectacular opening ceremony.

The Special Olympics was declared open last night as 80,000 people gathered in Croke Park to witness the spectacular opening ceremony.

Among them were the 7,000 athletes and their 3,000 coaches.

In all, 160 countries were led into the stadium by international film stars, musicians and sporting heroes.

The crowd was entertained by U2, Riverdance, The Corrs and Samantha Mumba among others.

Former South African President, Nelson Mandela, said he was very privileged to be attending the Games.
