Post offices hit by unofficial strike

Post offices throughout the country were closed today following unofficial action by members of the country’s Communications Workers’ Union over a reorganisation and pay row.

The dispute led to the closure of more than 20 major premises, including the GPO in Dublin’s O’Connell Street.

Reporting widespread disruption to services. An Post apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers by what it said was “unofficial industrial action by post office counter staff“.

A spokeswoman rejected claims made by the union that the dispute followed An Post’s failure to recognise recommendations made by Labour Court industrial dispute conciliators.
