Belfast unionist defends 'sectarian' remarks

A Democratic Unionist Party candidate for the post of Belfast Lord Mayor has sparked a row in the North by refusing to withdraw 'sectarian' comments.

Robin Newton described people living in west Belfast as a "parasites' paradise" 16 years ago.

Sinn Fein and the SDLP have both accused the councillor of sectarianism as the majority population in west Belfast is nationalist.

Mr Newton said he never intended to blacken the name of decent citizens, but he refused to apologise or withdraw the remarks.

He said his comments came while Belfast's old gas system was closing down and while gas board staff were being intimidated as they tried to collect outstanding debts.
