FF to lobby company on gas terminal project

Fianna Fáil TDs and senators from the western region have agreed to ask Enterprise Energy Ireland to re-apply for planning permission to build an onshore gas terminal in Co Mayo.

Fianna Fáil TDs and senators from the western region have agreed to ask Enterprise Energy Ireland to re-apply for planning permission to build an onshore gas terminal in Co Mayo.

An Bord Pleanala has already rejected the company's application for permission to construct a terminal in Bellanaboy on the grounds that it was a risk to public health and safety.

Junior Minister Frank Fahey, an avid supporter of the project, subsequently called a meeting of Fianna Fáil parliamentarians from the western region.

They have urged EEI, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, to continue its efforts to build the terminal to bring gas onshore from the Corrib field.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has also expressed support for the project, saying it would generate income and jobs in the area.

Local residents and environmentalists want EEI to construct an offshore terminal instead of the planned onshore facility.
