Police in the Canary Islands have said they are confident they have identified the man responsible for an assault which left an Irish tourist in a serious condition in hospital.

21-year-old Dubliner Daniel O'Callaghan is currently recovering after being badly beaten by a group of youths in the resort of Maspalomas, on the island of Gran Canaria, on Monday night.

A police spokesman said today that officers had visited the home of the man and were confident of making an arrest in the coming days.

Mr O'Callaghan's condition was described as delicate today, but he is now out of danger.
