Naughten calls for city metro system
Fine Gael spokesman on transport, Denis Naughten TD, today called on the Minister for Transport to consider the development of a city centre metro scheme for Dublin.
Deputy Naughten claimed a city centre metro would cost just €75m - €925 million less than the Minister’s plan for an underground tunnel connecting Connolly and Heuston stations.
"The train line that runs under the Pheonix Park is the easy and inexpensive solution to a metro for the Capital, according to a presentation by Platform 11 to the Oireachtas committee on Transport, today," said Deputy Naughten..
"The Phoenix Park tunnel has the potential for a metro development in Dublin. A double rail line connecting Dublin's mainline rail terminals already exists and with a little creativity could be turned into a valuable commuter asset within 18 months.
