A direct appeal by George Bush could help persuade the IRA to get rid of its weapons, Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy said today.

A direct appeal by George Bush could help persuade the IRA to get rid of its weapons, Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy said today.

Mr Murphy, who is due to greet President Bush and US Secretary of State Colin Powell when they fly into the North later today, said the US administration had played a positive role in advancing the peace process.
