The Labour Party has accused the Government of attempting to hide information from the public by watering down the provisions of the 1997 Freedom of Information Act.

Party spokesperson Joan Burton claimed the Government is afraid of what the public might find out.

Ms Burton said the proposed changes to the act published today are designed to prevent the public from knowing how decisions are reached by the Government.

She said nobody has complained about the act in the last six years, except the Fianna Fail-Progressive Democrats coalition.
