Dublin taxi drivers to mount airport stoppages

Taxi drivers have announced plans to hold two four-hour work stoppages at Dublin Airport next week to protest at the Government's failure to tackle the problems caused by the deregulation of the taxi industry.

The stoppages, organised by SIPTU, will take place between 9am and 1pm on Monday and between 7pm and 11pm on Tuesday.

The union said its members are not convinced that the appointment of an acting regulator next month will improve standards in the industry and ensure that all drivers can make a viable living.

Spokesman Jerry Brennan urged Transport Minister Seamus Brennan to introduce a moratorium on the issuing of new taxi licences to protect both the safety of the public and the livelihoods of existing drivers.
