A murder investigation has been launched after a well known gangland figure was shot in his car in Dublin city last night.

A murder investigation has been launched after a well known gangland figure was shot in his car in Dublin city last night.

The man, in his fifties, was shot four times at Spencer Dock Bridge at 9.30pm. Despite his injuries he attempted to drive to Maher hospital from the scene of the shooting, but crashed his car a short distance away.

He was removed from the scene of the crash by an ambulance crew, but died a short time later as surgeons tried to save him.
