Heath denies sanctioning use of lethal force

Former British Prime Minister Edward Heath has denied that he gave the British army the go-ahead to use lethal force in the North in the 1970s.

In evidence to the Saville Inquiry today, Mr Heath said he was not aware of and did not agree to a suggestion by the commander of British land forces in the North that rioters should be shot to restore law and order.

Today was the former British PM's third day of evidence at the inquiry, which is investigating the killing of 13 unarmed Catholic civilians by the British army in Derry on January 30, 1972.
