Ireland's inflation rate rose to 5% last month, mainly due to increases in the price of alcohol and tobacco and in the cost of restaurants and hotels.

Figures released today by the Central Statistics Office said prices rose by 0.7% on average in December, bringing the annualised rate up from 4.8% to 5%.
