Regeneration scheme boost for Omagh

The bomb-ravaged town of Omagh received a major boost today with the launch of a new £9.1m (€14m) arts centre and riverside regeneration scheme.

Work on the project which is being funded by the British Department of Social Development, the British Arts Council and the district council is expected to begin later this month.

SDLP Assembly member Joe Byrne said it would help put Omagh back on its feet after the Real IRA bomb which destroyed the heart of the town, killing 29 people including a woman with unborn twins.

“It is a major project in the regeneration of Omagh town, particularly after the devastation suffered in 1998,” he said.

“Over recent months Omagh has enjoyed some major announcements including today’s, which should help Omagh realise its potential as a regional growth town.”

A Department of Social Development spokesman said the project, which will include a river walkway and pedestrian bridge, was vital to the long term future of the town.

“Regenerating the riverfront will revive the heart of the town and provide renewed confidence and hope in the future of Omagh.

“The opening up of previously landlocked and derelict land on the riverside will enable the town to expand its commercial centre,” he added.

Today’s launch follows the announcement late last year of a £14m (€21.5m) investment in a new further and higher education college.

The private sector is currently investing around £100m (€154m) in commercial projects including a £15m (€23m) shopping development on the site of the old Royal Arms Hotel.
