2002 is wettest year on record
2002 was the wettest year on record at most of the country's weather stations.
Valentia Observatory in Kerry recorded the highest annual total for the county since records began there 110 years ago.
Dublin airport has also seen new record levels of rainfall since measurements began in 1941.
Michael McCauliffe of Met Eireann says Munster and Leinster have been worst hit.
"For many parts of the country it is well above normal. Most of our stations in Leinster and Munster had their wettest year ever," he said.
"The most remarkable one of all was the Valentia station in Co Kerry where records go back over 100 years and it was the wettest year ever there so that is quite something."
