Cork woman to be assessed for liver transplant

Critically ill mother-of-two Sylvia O'Leary from Ballincollig Co Cork is expected to be assessed for her third liver transplant in London this morning.

Mrs O'Leary was flown by air ambulance with her husband Des from University College Hospital Cork yesterday, to Kings College Hospital in London.

She had been on life support for a week in Cork following liver failure.

Mrs O'Leary contracted Hepatitis C in 1991 as a result of receiving contaminated blood product during her first liver transplant.

Her health had deteriorated recently and she was the subject of a row between her solicitor and the Minister for Health.

Her family had claimed that the Department of Health were delaying signing off on a compensation package, however on Christmas Eve the Minister finalised the terms of the package which is reported to be worth around €1m.
