North census 'a blow to republican hopes' says unionist

Republican hopes of achieving Irish unity have been dealt a crushing blow by a new breakdown of Protestant and Catholic populations in Northern Ireland, it was claimed today.

Protestant numbers have dipped by 5%, but the rising number of Catholics is not as high as predicted, according to the latest census statistics.
