IFI workers protest over redundancy payments

Workers who lost their job with the closure of the IFI plants in Arklow and Cork have held a protest march over their redundancy payments.

They have walked from Arklow to Dublin today to highlight the fact that workers at the company's Belfast plant are getting a better pay out.

More than 300 people lost their jobs when IFI closed earlier this year.

IFI worker-director David Morris says it is totally unacceptable to have a different severance package for workers in the North and South.

"Everybody accepts that it is unsustainable but nobody seems to be able to address it. So we have had to resort to walking the streets to try and highlight our case," he said.

"We have walked from Arklow to Dublin in segments, 10 workers at a time. We decided in order to achieve a profile for this case we needed to do something novel."
