Trimble dismisses Tory leadership speculation
Ulster Unionist Party leader, David Trimble, has denied weekend speculation that he is seeking the leadership position in the British Conservative Party.
The claims, which appeared in a Sunday newspaper, have been dismissed by Westminster observers, who say he couldn't command sufficient support even if he wanted the job.
However, Mr Trimble has confirmed that the UUP and the Conservative Party have had regular meetings to discuss how they can co-operate further.
It is accepted that most UUP members are natural conservatives, sharing common positions in the areas of law and order, policing and Europe.
There has been persistent speculation that conservatives might offer Trimble a post as European Commissioner, should he resign or be ousted as Ulster Unionist leader.
