300 protestors join anti-war rally

Around 300 demonstrators staged an anti-war protest today outside Shannon Airport in Co Clare against the use of the airport for the landing and re-fuelling of American military aircraft.

Around 300 demonstrators staged an anti-war protest today outside Shannon Airport in Co Clare against the use of the airport for the landing and re-fuelling of American military aircraft.

The event was orchestrated by a group calling itself the Grassroots Network, made up of associated political and community groups.

Among the demonstrators was former Cabinet minister Michael D Higgins.

There was tight garda security for protest and one man was taken into custody.

Two months ago, 10 arrests were made during a similar demonstration, when the airport’s perimeter fence was damaged.
