The tobacco industry has criticised the tax increase on cigarettes announced this afternoon.

The tobacco industry has criticised the tax increase on cigarettes announced this afternoon.

The Irish Tobacco Manufacturers Advisory Committee says that it is a regrettable move.

They insist it is one that will push up inflation and increase the cost burden on the one third of Irish adults who smoke.

The Committee also said that the 50c extra tax will lead to an increase in the smuggling of tobacco.
