Flood: Tribunal turns down Cosgrave application

The Flood Tribunal has turned down an application by counsel for former TD, Liam Cosgrave Junior, seeking all details of allegations made by Frank Dunlop regarding payments to politicians.

The tribunal has begun a new phase to establish who benefited from the re-zoning of land at Carrickmines in Co Dublin.

Before the tribunal got underway legal counsel for Cosgrave made an application seeking copies of every detail given to the tribunal by Dunlop.

Michael O'Higgins, counsel for Cosgrave, said his client received €2,000 in 1991, €5,000 in 1992 and €1,000 in 1993.

These payments coincided with the local, general and Seanad elections respectively and were made four years before Jackson Way was re-zoned.

He said they required these details, which were necessary to protect the reputation of his client.

After a break the tribunal rejected the application, saying that it was conscious of the constitutional rights of all its clients.

The tribunal said it was satisfied that its procedures are fair to all concerned.
