Gardai accused of harassing private investigator

The Morris Tribunal has heard from a private investigator that he was harassed by the Gardai.

William Flynn was employed by Co Donegal publican Frank McBrearty following the death of cattle dealer Richie Barron in 1996.

Mr Flynn said he was intimidated by Gardai because he advised the McBrearty family to initiate civil proceedings against a number of officers.

Some members of the McBrearty family have accused Gardai of attempting to frame them in connection with the death of Mr Barron and of subsequently launching a campaign of harassment against them.

Mr McBrearty had hired Mr Flynn to investigate alleged Garda activities relating to his extended family.

Several of Mr McBrearty's relatives, including his son, were arrested in connection with Mr Barron's death and have accused Gardai of harassing them while they were in custody.

The Morris Tribunal heard today that Mr Flynn, some of his staff and members of his family have sought representation at the inquiry in respect of their alleged harassment by Gardai.

The tribunal also heard that Mr Flynn forwarded a number of complaints to the Garda Complaints Board, accusing certain Gardai of engaging in a vendetta against him.

In their defence, the Gardai have accused Mr Flynn of harassing them by way of phone calls and letters.
